I would just like to add a little note here for visitors,  the reason there are three Panasonic 3dtv images on this page is for no other reason than most of the other makers images were really boring and uncolorful, I thought the Panasonic’s looked a lot nicer! that’s all – no other reason.

In my opinion there are three basic criteria that will be considered by the majority of people who are contemplating buying a 3D TV for the first time, I would imagine for a good many people their prime consideration may well be the price, these devices are not cheap by any means as you will see below, but by being a relatively new innovation it is to be expected that the initial prices will be high, in addition there will be other costs involved before one may begin 3D viewing apart from the set itself , the main expense will be the special glasses, these are required for all 3D televisions currently on the market, this is not so bad unless you have a large family, in which case it could be a considerable sum. Some makers supply one pair that come with the tv when you buy it, most however, do not. The other major item you may need will be a Blu-ray DVD player, if you wish to watch movies in 3D, of course, you may already have one of these in which case you will not need anything else except maybe an HDMI cable or two.

Secondly, some people may need a particular screen size that best fits their room area or likely viewing position, if this is a set with a smaller screen then price may not be such a major issue as it will be less anyway for smaller sizes, there is some data to help you with this on this page.

Lastly there will be yet more people looking for specific features and functions, these may well be computer gamers or home cinema lovers who are looking for particular connection features, all of the above will be discussed and outlined  on other relevant pages on this site, you will find all necessary navigation links installed for your convenience.

If you are not at all up to date with technology or are overwhelmed with all the jargon, and are baffled by all the technical wizardry, fear not all is explained within,  I have put together a page or two explaining all the various forms of 3D TV available in an easy to understand (I hope) format and one or two other snippets that I hope will help you too.

What is the Correct Size of 3D HDTV For My Room

If you would like to know what the correct size of HDTV is for your room, It can be calculated quite easily with a little basic math, with older style televisions before the advent of HD, a rule of thumb that was recommended was that most viewers should watch their tv set from between three and six times the screen size away in inches so for a 36″ screen size the optimum distance would be 9 to 18 feet (108″ & 216″).

However with modern HDTV televisions, because of the greatly superior image sharpness, a viewer may sit a lot closer to the set without noticing the individual screen pixels, so the rule for HDTV sets has now become 1.5 to 3 times the distance for best results.

You may work this out easily yourself once you know two things, first where your TV is going to be sited, and where you are going to be sitting whilst watching by using the useful formula below, if your math is no good don’t worry I have put some data in below for you to you can easily see what size set will be best for you.

Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between led lcd and plasma tvs?

There is a category page answering this question on this site you can read more about the pros and cons here

What is the cheapest 3d tv?

The cheapest models I have been able to locate so far are manufactured by LG, Samsung and Vizio, so these makers will be will be where to best focus your attention, I hope you have the various models on these pages shortly.

Do I need to use special glasses to view 3DTV?

Yes, all currently available models require the use of special Active Shutter glasses, and these may of course be worn over the top of spectacles, as they are all fully adjustable.

Where can I buy 3d glasses?
You may see these items listed on the TV sales pages you are viewing on Amazon, or you may even see a prompt on the checkout

cart, if not just type the term in the search box.
It should be noted that most 3D glasses are make-specific and are not interchangeable between makes, it is recommended if you

buy extra pairs to buy the brand for your TV, this will mean you are always assured of the best picture.

What else will I need?

Apart from glasses, you may also want a Blu-ray DVD player if you do not already have one, you will need it to watch any DVD movies in 3D, this will need connecting with an HDMI cable. 3D content to watch, either from that mentioned above, that which may be shown free in your particular area, or by a subscription to a cable or satellite TV channel.

What is the biggest size of 3D TV?

The biggest generally available are 60″ or so, one or two makers produce 80″ screens, and by now there may be even bigger versions available but these are far less common. See the table on this page to match the screen size to your room.

What is the best 3d tv?

This cannot be truthfully answered as they have not been in production long enough for any meaningful data to be gathered, my own view is that in this type of market any maker cannot afford to sell a bad product, as their reputation may be at stake if they sell junk, customer loyalty is important for sales in this business.

How long do 3d tvs last?
How long is a piece of string? :-) difficult to say with any certainty, but should be 30 – 60,000 hours plus. 30,000 hours at 6 hours a day = about 13 years plus.

What is screen burn-in?

This is a condition that affected cathode ray tube (crt) televisions, and can still affect Plasma sets if a single image is left on the screen for too long, for example a paused game or DVD, this is because both of these types of set use Phosphorous in order to produce an image. LCD/LED televisions are not affected by screen burn.

Can I connect my computer to a 3D TV?
In a lot of cases this is possible but you will need to check the makers specifications.

Can I connect to the internet?
Nearly all 3DTVs make internet connection available to access many different types of applications (apps). Some sets have built-in wireless routers, others require these as a separate plug in item.

Do 3d tvs require special setting up?

They are no different to a normal TV with regards to setting up, they may have to be tuned in to your particular stations, and any personal preferences set using the various menus using the remote control, the majority are not complicated to do with a little patience and a good read of the manual.

Can I listen to music and view photos

Yes this is possible on nearly all sets via the USB ports and menu systems, many sets also come with an array of sockets for plugging in a camcorder, or hooking up to your home sound system.
